The Aesthetics of Things

A working taxonomy of the visual languages a product can speak. Each plate below renders the aesthetic it names. The brutalism specimen is brutalist, the glass one is frosted, the kawaii one is cute. Real-world exemplars are noted beneath each. No closed list exists; aesthetics are coined faster than they are catalogued.

Reduction & Restraint

This catalogue is intentionally incomplete. Aesthetics are coined faster than anyone can list them, and most strong products don't sit purely in one. They pick a dominant aesthetic and borrow tension from a second: the iPod is minimalism over skeuomorphic warmth; Teenage Engineering is playful-toylike on an industrial-functionalist base. That deliberate pairing is usually where distinctiveness lives.
